The Berean Fellowship

The Berean Fellowship is dedicated to the propagation of the qualities that were noted of the Bereans by Luke, who was the human instrument used by God to pen the book of Acts in the New Testament.

Here is what is said of them in Acts 17:11, taken from the Authorized (King James) Version of the Bible:

"These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so."

I offer a simple exposition of the verse of scipture above here:

1. The word "noble" comes from the Greek word: εὐγενέστεροι, pronounced "eugenesteroi" and literally means of a higher noble birth.  Here, however, it is obviously being used figuratively to express a nobility of heart or mind - because their minds were open to truth and they were willing to receive it.  Their interest in the message was sincere and their response to the message received was both courteous and considerate.  As James exhorted, they received with meekness the engrafted word (James 1:21) and as a result, many of them became followers of Jesus Christ.
2. They received the word of God with "all readiness of mind"; they were eager to receive truth.
3. They "searched the scriptures".  They already had a habit of doing so before Paul showed up - which is why many of them believed.  They listened to the preaching and teaching and then took the time to conduct their own study in order to evaluate the what Paul was saying in the light of the Revealed Truth that was already in their possession.  They would use the Scriptures that was already in their possession to either compare and accept or contrast and reject the new things they were hearing; they were diligent to examine the teaching.
4. They "searched the scriptures daily".  To study the scriptures was routine with them, they studied the scriptures every day.
